Visceral Manipulation (Revised Edition)
Osteopathy and other systems of manual medicine have developed a variety of models for understanding the mechanics of proper and improper motion of the musculoskeletal system. In this important and pioneering work, that same structural vision is applied to the visceral system. The central premise of Visceral Manipulation is that the interrelationship of structure and function among the internal organs is at least as strong as that among the constituents of the musculoskeletal system; and that, like the musculoskeletal system, manipulation of the viscera can be beneficially used in the treatment of a wide variety of problems affecting any of the body’s systems. In this revised edition, over a hundred-and-thirty new illustrations and photographs, many of them in two colors, graphically depict the ideas in the text. Minor updates have also been made to the original text..

Visceral Manipulation II (Revised Edtion)
In this book, Jean-Pierre Barral further develops the concepts, techniques, and approaches first described in his pioneering work Visceral Manipulation. While that text focused on the fundamental anatomical and physiological background of this approach to treatment, along with the basic manipulative techniques, Visceral Manipulation II is centered around clinical signs, diagnostic methods, emotional connections, and more advanced techniques. The first chapter introduces the concept of lesional chains and reflexogenic zones that are crucial to the utilization of visceral approaches in the context of osteopathy. There is an in-depth discussion of such unique diagnostic methods as general and local listening, proper uses of the Adson-Wright and other orthopedic tests, the relationship between the emotions and the organs, techniques for restoring proper visceral viscoelasticity, and strategies for treatment, including some special problems associated with manipulation in children. Other chapters discuss such structures as the peritoneum, spleen, and pancreas that were not covered in Visceral Manipulation. There are also discussions of the gastroesophageal junction, stomach and duodenum, liver, gallbladder and bile ducts, jejunoileum and colon, and kidneys. Each of these chapters complements and expands upon those in the first book by providing fresh and more detailed perspectives on important aspects of using visceral manipulation in the clinic. In this revised edition, all of the illustrations have been updated, photographs have been added, and the text revised to more closely follow Jean-Pierre Barral s present approach to visceral manipulation. New techniques are introduced, and background information provided on such topics as the relationship of the different organs to the emotions. Visceral Manipulation II is an important book for all practitioners who wish to advance their skills in visceral manipulation..

Bathers, Bodies, Beauty: The Visceral Eye (The Charles Eliot Norton Lectures)
To the eye of some viewers, Renoir's Great Bathers are the very picture of female sensuality and beauty. To others, they embody a whole tradition of masculine mastery and feminine display. Yet others find in the bathers a feminine fantasy of bodily liberation. The points of view are many, various, occasionally startling--and through them, Linda Nochlin explores the contradictions and dissonances that mark experience as well as art. Her book--about art, the body, beauty, and ways of viewing--confronts the issues posed in representations particularly of the female body in the art of impressionists, modern masters, and contemporary realists and post-modernists. Nochlin begins by focusing on the painterly preoccupation with bathing, whether at the beach, in lakes and rivers, in public swimming pools, or in bathtubs. In discussions of Renoir, Manet, Cezanne, Bonnard, and Picasso, of late-twentieth-century and contemporary artists such as Philip Pearlstein, Alice Neel, and Jenny Saville, of grotesque imagery, the concept of beauty, and the body in realism, she develops an interpretive collage incorporating the readings of differing, strong-willed, female viewpoints. Among these is, of course, Nochlin's own, a vantage point subtly charted here through a longtime engagement with art, art history, and artists. In many ways a personal book, Bathers, Bodies, Beauty brings to bear a lifetime of looking at, teaching, talking about, wrestling with, loving, and hating art to reveal and complicate the lived and felt--the visceral--experience of art. How Race Is Made: Slavery, Segregation, and the Senses
For at least two centuries, argues Mark Smith, white southerners used all of their senses--not just their eyes--to construct racial difference and define race. His provocative analysis, extending from the colonial period to the mid-twentieth century, shows how whites of all classes used the artificial binary of "black" and "white" to justify slavery and erect the political, legal, and social structure of segregation. Based on painstaking research, How Race Is Made is a highly original, always frank, and often disturbing book. After enslaved Africans were initially brought to America, the offspring of black and white sexual relationships (consensual and forced) complicated the purely visual sense of racial typing. As mixed-race people became more and more common and as antebellum race-based slavery and then postbellum racial segregation became central to southern society, white southerners asserted that they could rely on their other senses--touch, smell, sound, and taste--to identify who was "white" and who was not. Sensory racial stereotypes were invented and irrational, but at every turn, Smith shows, these constructions of race, immune to logic, signified difference and perpetuated inequality. Smith argues that the history of southern race relations and the construction of racial difference on which that history is built cannot be understood fully on the basis of sight alone. In order to come to terms with the South's past and present, Smith says, we must explore the sensory dynamics underpinning the deeply emotional construction of race. How Race Is Made takes a bold step toward that understanding..

Vaughan Oliver: Visceral Pleasures
Vaughan Oliver is one of the most consistently innovative and significant graphic designers to have emerged in the last 15 years, a highly influential member of the small group [with Neville Brody, Malcolm Garrett and Peter Saville] that changed the face of British graphics in the 1980s. Oliver's remarkable and unmatched oeuvre as regular designer for London record label 4AD won him an international following among fellow designers and also, unusually, among music fans, who savor his emotive graphic imagery as an essential part of the 4AD experience. Divided into thematic sections, the book is designed by Vaughan Oliver himself and combines a cool, carefully edited exposition of his intensely visual work with a seductive, and always surprising, demonstration of his approach. Rick Poynor is the founding editor of Eye, the international review of graphic design, and contributing editor of I.D and Blueprint. His previous books include the best-selling Typography Now: The Next wave [1991] and The Graphic Edge [1993]. He lectures regularly in Europe and the US, and is a visiting professor at the Royal College of Art. The first definitive monograph of graphic designer Vaughan Oliver Will appeal to professional designers, students of design and photography, and all those interested in contemporary music graphics From its front cover to its final page, the book is a highly collectible Vaughan Oliver design in its own right.

Irigaray & Deleuze: Experiments in Visceral Philosophy
For Tamsin Lorraine, the works of Luce Irigaray and Gilles Deleuze open up new ways of thinking about subjectivity. Focusing on the affinities between the theorists' views--while addressing weaknesses of each--she offers both a cogent analysis of their often challenging writings on this topic and an accessible introduction to their philosophical projects. Through her readings she articulates an approach to subjectivity as an embodied, dynamic process, one that speaks to beliefs about personal identity as well as to the practical problems people face in their relations with one another. Lorraine begins by distinguishing between "conceptual" and "corporeal" considerations of subjectivity and by reviewing recent interdisciplinary efforts to theorize the body. She then turns to Irigaray and Deleuze, finding in the former's notion of the "feminine other" and in the latter's, unique conceptions of nomadic thinking inspiration for a model designed to overcome mind/body dualisms. Her analysis of Irigaray and Deleuze suggests a conception of humanity which amounts to a visceral philosophy--a way of thinking that is receptive to the fluxes of dynamic life forces..
