Magic in Practice - Introducing Medical NLP: the Art and Science of Language in Healing and Health - Special Offer $39.99 - Usually $49.99
Between a third and half of all patients seeking help from the medical profession are suffering from medically unexplained symptoms, and we are facing an epidemic of complex chronic conditions that have no easily discernible pathology or cause. Pressure for a model of 'whole-person' health care has been growing over the past 25 years, but, no practical, costeffective, integrative model has been suggested, until now. Medical NLP - developed out of the work of Dr Richard Bandler and the field of Neuro-Linguistic Programming - offers for the first time a practical methodology and explicit interventions to help tackle this debilitating array of problems. Supported by new research and extensive clinical experience, Medical NLP offers the only internationally recognised and licensed health practitioner training that seamlessly integrates psychosocial therapeutic approaches with the existing biomechanical principles and time constraints of the consultation process. Written in an accessible style for doctors, nurses, therapists and all other allied health professionals, this is a book about solutions, rather than problems. Featuring real-life case studies it shows how Medical NLP can be used to achieve more positive outcomes for both patients and the professionals from whom they seek help. Uniquely, an interactive website has been set up to answer questions, host discussions and provide support for readers who wish to explore further the practical application of the skill sets provided in the book. 'This book shows us the structure of those times when we've watched a colleague with a patient and thought, 'What a great doctor!' We know Medical NLP is effective, and, here, the reasons why it works are explained in terms of contemporary neuroscience. Applying what can be learned from this book will transform the way we interact with our patients, and make those interactions more exciting, stimulating and rewarding.' Dr Jonathan Bannister Consultant and Honorary Senior Lecturer in Pain Medicine and Anaesthesia Winner: Medical Futures Innovation & Enterprise Award 2007 'I can honestly say I've been waiting for something like this since the very beginning of my medical career' Dr Ayan Panja, General Practitioner and author 'Be aware that Medical NLP is very powerful. It can and will change your life and the lives of your patients, for the better. Garner Thomson has all the skills to help you take you and your patients' lives forward. How do I know? Well he did it for me - but don't take my word for it. See for yourself in his book.' Mr John Wood FRCS Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon 'This book can help the counsellor to expand the art of the possible in therapy. It spells out the mechanics of carrying hope and just how significant this is in achieving the goals of a therapeutic relationship' Carol Ervine Psychologist and counsellor Also available: I Will Need to Break Your Other Leg - ISBN 1905140215 The Love Trap - ISBN 1905140118 Essential Carer's Guide - ISBN 190514007X.

The Social Atom: Why the Rich Get Richer, Cheaters Get Caught, and Your Neighbor Usually Looks Like You
The idiosyncrasies of human decision-making have confounded economists and social theorists for years. If each person makes choices for personal (and often irrational) reasons, how can people’s choices be predicted by a single theory? How can any economic, social, or political theory be valid? The truth is, none of them really are. Mark Buchanan makes the fascinating argument that the science of physics is beginning to provide a new picture of the human or “social atom,” and help us understand the surprising, and often predictable, patterns that emerge when they get together. Look at patterns, not people, Buchanan argues, and rules emerge that can explain how movements form, how interest groups operate, and even why ethnic hatred persists. Using similar observations, social physicists can predict whether neighborhoods will integrate, whether stock markets will crash, and whether crime waves will continue or abate. Brimming with mind games and provocative experiments, The Social Atom is an incisive, accessible, and comprehensive argument for a whole new way to look at human social behavior. .

The Neuroscience of Fair Play: Why We (Usually) Follow the Golden Rule
We remember the admonition of our mothers: “Treat others as you want them to treat you.” But what if being nice was something we were inclined by nature to do anyway? Renowned neuroscientist Donald Pfaff upends our entire understanding of ethics and social contracts with an intriguing proposition: the Golden Rule is hardwired into the human brain. Pfaff, the researcher who first discovered the connections between specific brain circuits and certain behaviors, contends that the basic ethics governing our everyday lives can be traced directly to brain circuitry. Writing with popular science journalist Sandra J. Ackerman, he explains in this clear and concise account how specific brain signals induce us to consider our actions as if they were directed at ourselves—and subsequently lead us to treat others as we wish to be treated. Brain hormones are a part of this complicated process, and The Neuroscience of Fair Play discusses how brain hormones can catalyze behaviors with moral implications in such areas as self-sacrifice, parental love, friendship, and violent aggression. Drawing on his own research and other recent studies in brain science, Pfaff offers a thought-provoking hypothesis for why certain ethical codes and ideas have remained constant across human societies and cultures throughout the world and over the centuries of history. An unprecedented and provocative investigation, The Neuroscience of Fair Play offers a new perspective on the increasingly important intersection of neuroscience and ethics. (20070914).

He Usually Lived with a Female: The Life of a California Newspaperman
In 1925, a young Arizona reporter, virtually fresh off the farm, wrote a love letter to a sophisticated Jewish New Yorker he had met at a dinner dance. It was the first of scores of letters they would exchange across the continent over the next four decades. She, Fanny (Toni) Strassman, became his literary agent. He, C.H. (Brick) Garrigues, became a graft-busting investigator in Los Angeles, a jazz reviewer in San Francisco, a husband and father, a target of Red-hunters - and a man haunted by a secret from his high school past. This book is his story..

The Mesnevi and the Acts of the Adepts
The Mesnevi (usually known as the Mesneviyi, or Holy Mesnevi) of Mevlana (our Lord) Jelalu-d'-Din, Muhammed, er-Rumi, Book the First: Trubner's Oriental Series In spite of the fact that the Persian Sufi master Rumi has achieved huge name reconition, his works took a long time to be translated into English. This was one of the first English translations of a major portion of Rumi's Masnavi, his largest work. The complete Masnavi is said to comprise 25,700 couplets. This translation is of the first book (of six) of the Masnavi; this was as far as Redhouse apparently got with his translation. Later, in 1898, E.H. Whinfield released an abridged translation of the first six books, also available at this site (here). The first complete translation of the Masnavi was by R.A. Nicholson, published in London by Luzac and Co. from 1925-40. A.J. Arberry also published several ground-breaking translations of Rumi in the mid-20th century. The Acts of the Adepts, which forms the first part of this book, is also notable. Th.

It Usually Begins With Ayn Rand
This edition of It Usually Begins With Ayn Rand contains much of the text that appeared in the original edition—revised and edited to conform to modern style—plus new chapters dealing with events that took place after the book was first published. Some of the new material deals with my campaign for Governor of New York as the Free Libertarian Party candidate, a discussion of events that transpired on the American political scene after that benighted campaign, plus thoughts on my current political and spiritual leanings. The perennial success of It Usually Begins With Ayn Rand has startled no one more than me. Sales started slowly, then began to pick up over the years, until the book became an underground classic that has gained readership over the decades. It should be read as political memoir, a first-hand account of a political movement, mostly fact, but with fictional elements and hyperbole added for effect. A reviewer once said that most memoirs are neither fact nor fiction; they are the truth as the author remembers it. So it is with It Usually Begins With Ayn Rand..
