Pittsburgh Streamlined Trolleys (PA) (Images of Rail)
Pittsburgh Streamlined Trolleys covers the history of the trolley car system that once had the third largest fleet of Presidents' Conference Committee trolley cars in North America. Pittsburgh Railways Company was very innovative and constantly made design improvements in its trolley cars. This led to increased ridership, as these streamlined trolleys were quiet, fast, and had comfortable seating. With the increased use of automobiles, ridership declined. After the Port Authority of Allegheny County took over Pittsburgh Railways, most of the trolley routes were abandoned. However, a number of trolleys were refurbished with paint schemes that included psychedelic commercial advertising and community messages. The last runs of these trolleys occurred in 1999, and new light rail vehicles are now in service..

American Streamlined Design: The World of Tomorrow
The twentieth-century's fast cars, trains, and planes promised to conquer space and time; their aerodynamic styling and metallic bodies embodied a new and modern beauty that enchanted American designers from the late 1920s to the 1950s. Streamlining became popular for everything, including toy scooters, typewriters, power tools, teakettles, Coca-Cola bottles, Lucky Strike packaging, Fiestaware pitchers, Studebaker cars, Greyhound buses, and the 20th Century Limited train. This book celebrates streamlining as epitomized by the work of Raymond Loewy, Donald Deskey, Henri Dreyfuss, Russel Wright, and Norman Bel Geddes, and introduces other industrial designers, also highlighting the resurgence of streamlining among international vanguard designers from the 1980s to the present. Patent drawings and period photographs demonstrate the usage of these dynamically styled objects. Two hundred objects drawn from the Eric Brill Collection (recently donated to the American Friends of Canada) and supplemented by the Stewart Collection of 20th Century Design were photographed for this book. A full bibliography, biographies of the designers, and index complete the study..

One-Person Puppetry Streamlined and Simplified: With 38 Folktale Scripts
Most guides to puppetry assume multiple puppeteers, large stage, elaborate props, custom-designed puppets and more. With library staffing and budgets stretched thin, and other curricular commitments for teachers, few have the time or resources to develop full-blown puppet performances. Expert author Frey provides a much-needed puppet alternative to enrich story times, book talks, and other library events for children of all ages. Over the course of 20 years, she has perfected nontraditional shortcuts that make solo amateur puppetry painless, cost-effective - and fun! In Part One, Frey shares the techniques to: Create a stage that one person can carry and fit in a car. Make puppets out of easily available materials (stuffed animals, doll heads, papier mache). Learn stage secrets for warming up. Plan for a streamlined tale - performed by just a couple of characters, supplemented with a narrator. Part Two features scripts for 38 simplified tales, including humorous "fractured" fairy tales, folk tales from around the globe (Japan, Tibet, Russia, Arabia) and adaptations of Aesop's Fables. Also plan for entertaining patter between these short plays - songs, parodies, jokes, riddles, and the large puppet that can serve as the introducer. Children's librarians, teachers, pre-school programs, even parents and home-schoolers can entertain their audiences using this simple proven system..
