Designing Disney's Theme Parks: The Architecture of Reassurance
From the day it opened in July 1955, in an event given live TV coverage, Disneyland has been a key symbol of contemporary American culture It has been both celebrated and attacked as the ultimate embodiment of consumer society, a harbinger of shopping-mall culture, a symbol of American hegemony in entertainment, the epitome of fantasy, simulation, pastiche, and the blurring of distinctions between reality and mass-media imagery. Yet for all the power of Disneyland as metaphor, almost no one has discussed the making of this unique place, with its far-flung colonies in Florida, Japan, and France. Written to accompany an exhibition at the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal, Designing Disney's Theme Parks: The Architecture of Reassurance is the first book to look beyond the multiple myths of Disneyland.

Uniting a roster of authors chosen from wide-ranging disciplines, this study is the first to examine the influence of Disneyland on both our built environment and our architectural imagination. Tracing the relationship of the Disney parks to their historical forbears, it charts Disneyland's evolution from one man's personal dream to a multinational enterprise, a process in which the Disney "magic" has moved ever closer to the real world. Editor Karal Ann Marling, Professor of Art History and American Studies at the University of Minnesota, draws upon her pioneering work in the Disney archives to reconstruct and analyze the intentions and strategies behind the parks. She is joined by Marty Sklar, Vice Chairman and Principal Creative Executive of Walt Disney Imagineering, historian Neil Harris, art historian Erika Doss, geographer Yi-Fu Tuan, critic Greil Marcus, and architect Frank Gehry to provide a unique perspective on one of the great post-war American icons.

Bibliotherapy: When Kids Need Books: A Guide for Those in Need of Reassurance and Their Teachers, Parents, and Friends
The most important qualification that the author brings to this book is a genuine care and concern for her students Everyone has dealt with at least one of the issues listed in this book at some point in his/her lifetime Whether that issue was conquered with the help of a loved one, through therapy, or is still weighing on the individual, the therapeutic power of a book is often overlooked. The reassurance gained when an individual learns that they are not the only one, can open several doors of communication, and can put one on the road to recovery or coming to terms with an issue. In schools, bibliotherapy can greatly increase the connectivity of curriculum to the individual student. A genuine relation to a book can help students cope with their current situation. An added bonus is that with the increased interest, academic growth is more likely to occur. In addition, those who want to help, but don't understand what their loved one is going through, can gain empathy by reading about a similar situation. This will better equip an individual to open the lines of communication with someone they care about..

Constructing Regional Security: The Role of Arms Transfers, Arms Control, and Reassurance
In this book William Durch examines conventional weapons proliferation since World War II, the role of arms transfers in fueling regional conflict, and prospects for curbing the global arms trade. Noting that supply side arms control efforts, which seek to constrain the companies and countries that produce and distribute major conventional weapons, have a poor international track record, Durch argues for a broader approach that tries to get at the demand side of the equation. Addressing the political and regional dynamics that impel arms acquisitions, he looks at how arms control might be combined with confidence and security-building measures to contain demand, and how value-based arms trade control measures like “codes of conduct” could be implemented in stepwise fashion consistent with US national interests in regional stability.

Just by answering 50 easy-to-complete, highly revealing questions, you will know if what you are thinking, doing, and feeling as a parent is normal...or not. And what can be done about it.

Children, while often angelic and sweet, can be challenging as well. You can feel overwhelmed by your children’s behavior, and ask yourself:

■ Are my responses and actions correct?
■ Do other parents feel unsure of how to handle certain situations with their children as well?
■ Is it normal to be so uncertain that what I am doing is correct?

This book addresses your needs and concerns as a parent. Created by parenting expert Sara Dimerman, Am I A Normal Parent? reveals the behaviors, questions, and problems that you face on a daily basis and addresses the insecurities and fears common to parents world-wide.

Every parent faces questions and uncertainties when it comes to raising children. There are no absolutes, and in the face of the profound responsibility of being a parent in this day and age, it can be very stressful to have self-doubt.
Rest assured: you are not alone. All parents question their actions and often feel insecure about their choices. In addition, there are numerous questions that parents are often afraid to ask:

■ “Is it okay to get angry when my toddler doesn’t listen? “
■ “Is it okay to get jealous when my child monopolizes my spouse’s time?”
■ “Is it normal to wonder if I am being judged by my peers?”
■ “Who defines normal, anyway?”

Am I a Normal Parent? tackles such questions head on. By addressing common concerns, Sara Dimerman encourages you to rethink interpretations of societal norms in a positive and constructive way.

Am I a Normal Parent? encourages you in a warm and friendly manner to work harder to define yourself, and lead by example so that parenting, while still a challenge, is reflective of your own values.

Recommended reading for parents everywhere.
