Clouds of Secrecy: The Army's Germ Warfare Tests Over Populated Areas: The Army's Germ Warfare Tests Over Populated Areas (Littlefield, Adams Quality Paperback)
In the 1970s Americans learned for the first time that they had been used for decades as unsuspecting guinea pigs in a series of astonishing experiments conducted by the US Army. Military researchers had been secretly spraying clouds of bacteria over populated areas in order to study America's vulnerability to biological weapons. Many civilians have suffered illness, even death, as a consequence..

Humans as Components of Ecosystems: The Ecology of Subtle Human Effects and Populated Areas
This book highlights the importance to ecological studies of incorporating humans and their effects on ecosystems In Humans as Components of Ecosystems, leading experts from a variety of disciplines address a number of important issues, including: * The prominent role of humans in the function of ecosystems on Earth * Why humans have been ignored in ecological studies * Approaches taken by social scientists, historians, geographers, economists, and anthropologists in the study of human activities * The emergence of a new ecological paradigm accommodating human activities * Methods for studying subtle human effects, and human-populated ecosystems * Future research and training required to include humans effectively as components of ecological systems. This book will be of interest to students and researchers in ecology, and to policymakers and environmental managers. In addition, it will inform a range of social scientists about new opportunties for integrating their ideas with those of ecologists..

Comet and Asteroid Impact Hazards on a Populated Earth: Computer Modeling
Comet and Asteroid Impact Hazards explores the anticipated consequences of comet and asteroid impact. It presents the first computer simulations of the hazards of comet and asteroid bombardment of a populated Earth. Previous estimates of fatality and damage rates on the 100 to 10,000 year time scale are shown to be too low because they neglect rare, highly lethal outriders of the populations of bombarding objects, those with exceptional strength, unusually low entry velocity, and near-horizontal entry angles. This is the first realistic assessment of both the mean casualty rate and the expected statistical fluctuations in that rate. A breakdown of fatality and damage rates by impactor energy and compositional class suggests lessons for both asteroid search strategies and interdiction techniques.
This book is written so that anyone with college level experience in the physical sciences can understand it. It includes a disk that allows the reader to simulate impact catastrophes. It serves as a useful resource in various physical sciences courses such as astronomy, planetary science, and environmental science.

* Quantatively rigorous treatment of the state of impact hazard prediction, including stuctural blast damage, firestorm ignition, tsunami generation
* Realistic treatment of the impact on population, composition, and orbits
* Attention to economic and public policy issues of warning, interdiction, and asteroid and comet search strategies
* Comparison of simulation results to historical records
* Detailed and realistic Monte Carlo simulation software included.
