Large-Scale C++ Software Design (Addison-Wesley Professional Computing Series)
Developing a large-scale software system in C++ requires more than just a sound understanding of the logical design issues covered in most books on C++ programming To be successful, you will also need a grasp of physical design concepts that, while closely tied to the technical aspects of development, include a dimension with which even expert software developers may have little or no experience. This is the definitive book for all C++ software professionals involved in large development efforts such as databases, operating systems, compilers, and frameworks. It is the first C++ book that actually demonstrates how to design large systems, and one of the few books on object-oriented design specifically geared to practical aspects of the C++ programming language. In this book, Lakos explains the process of decomposing large systems into physical (not inheritance) hierarchies of smaller, more manageable components. Such systems with their acyclic physical dependencies are fundamentally easier and more economical to maintain, test, and reuse than tightly interdependent systems. In addition to explaining the motivation for following good physical as well as logical design practices, Lakos provides you with a catalog of specific techniques designed to eliminate cyclic, compile-time, and link-time (physical) dependencies. He then extends these concepts from large to very large systems. The book concludes with a comprehensive top-down approach to the logical design of individual components. Appendices include a valuable design pattern "Protocol Hierarchy" designed to avoid fat interfaces while minimizing physical dependencies; the details of implementing an ANSI C compatible C++ procedural interface; and a complete specification for a suite of UNIX-like tools to extract and analyze physical dependencies. Practical design rules, guidelines, and principles are also collected in an appendix and indexed for quick reference. 0201633620B04062001.

Grand Scale: Monumental Prints in the Age of Durer and Titian (Davis Museum and Cultural Center, Wellesley College)
"Grand Scale" brings to light rare surviving examples of mural-size prints - a Renaissance art form nearly lost from historical record. The most famous sixteenth-century woodcuts, engravings, and etchings were those done on an intimate scale. Yet artists also worked in an entirely different category of print production, producing mural-size prints that sometimes reached as high as ten feet. This handsome book, which features nearly fifty examples from Italy, Germany, France and the Netherlands, explores these multi-block woodcut and multi-plate engraving ensembles as vital contributions to the visual culture of their time.Comprising five essays, "Grand Scale" documents the relationship of monumental prints to the history of prints in general and also to mapmaking, painting, and book illustration, while addressing image design and modular printing from multiple, repeating blocks..

OSPF and IS-IS: Choosing an IGP for Large-Scale Networks
The practical guide to large-scale networking with OSPF and IS-IS This is the definitive guide to using OSPF and IS-IS protocols in large-scale IP enterprise, carrier, and service provider networks. Well-known network designer Jeff Doyle draws on his consulting experience, offering realistic advice and straight answers on every aspect of working with link-state protocols--from scalability, reliability, and security to area design and database synchronization. This book is organized to help network engineers and architects compare OSPF and IS-IS. One feature at a time, Doyle first demonstrates how a topic or feature is implemented in OSPF, and then walks through a similar implementation using IS-IS. Professionals who are relatively new to large-scale networking will welcome his practical introduction to the concepts, goals, and history of link state protocols.Coverage includes * Understanding message types, encapsulation, architecture, LSAs, and LSPs * Optimizing addressing, neighbor discovery, adjacencies, and router designation * Improving scalability: controlling the scope of flooding, link state database size, SPF calculation efficiency, and much more * Designing and operating large-scale networks for maximum security and reliability * Hardening networks to thwart attacks against routing protocols * Comparing OSPF and IS-IS extensibility * Utilizing extensions for MPLS-based traffic engineering, IPv6, and multi-topology routing * Troubleshooting OSPF and IS-IS log entries, debug output, and LS databases Doyle's thorough explanations, end-of-chapter review questions, and many wide-ranging examples for both Cisco's IOS and Juniper's JUNOS also make this book an exceptional resource for anyone pursuing a CCIE or JNCIE certification. The Large Scale Structure of Space-Time (Cambridge Monographs on Mathematical Physics)
Einstein's General Theory of Relativity leads to two remarkable predictions: first, that the ultimate destiny of many massive stars is to undergo gravitational collapse and to disappear from view, leaving behind a 'black hole' in space; and secondly, that there will exist singularities in space-time itself. These singularities are places where space-time begins or ends, and the presently known laws of physics break down. They will occur inside black holes, and in the past are what might be construed as the beginning of the universe. To show how these predictions arise, the authors discuss the General Theory of Relativity in the large. Starting with a precise formulation of the theory and an account of the necessary background of differential geometry, the significance of space-time curvature is discussed and the global properties of a number of exact solutions of Einstein's field equations are examined. The theory of the causal structure of a general space-time is developed, and is used to study black holes and to prove a number of theorems establishing the inevitability of singualarities under certain conditions. These conditions are shown to be satisfied in the vicinity of stars of more than twice the solar mass near the endpoint of their nuclear evolution, and in a time-reversed sense for the universe as a whole. In the first case, the singularity in our past. A discussion of the Cauchy problem for General Relativity is also included in the book..

Developing a Comprehensive Faculty Evaluation System: A Guide to Designing, Building, and Operating Large-Scale Faculty Evaluation Systems (JB - Anker)
This highly successful handbook provides practical, proven models for developing and using a comprehensive faculty evaluation system. Based on 36 years of research and experience building and operating large-scale faculty evaluation systems, as well as consulting experience to thousands of administrators and faculty from hundreds of colleges and universities of all types, this new edition includes more detailed information about the process of building and operating a comprehensive faculty evaluation system and a new model for conceptualizing the full complexity of faculty performance itself. The heart of the book remains the same reliable eight-step process that has worked so well for so many institutions. Each step, including the definitions of the various roles to be evaluated, has been expanded and enhanced based on the experiences of many institutions that have followed the procedure outlined in this book. This third edition also includes a new introductory section; new research in the field; updated forms and procedures; a new, detailed case study of an institution that developed a web-enabled, computer-supported system based on the eight-step process; and a new body of work that defines the professoriate as a meta-profession, with a rubric for defining more than 20 faculty skill sets. Contents include: - Preliminary issues in planning for the development of a comprehensive faculty evaluation system
- Step 1: Determining the faculty role model
