Some Delights of the Hudson Valley
A sense of humor is what lead me to my eventual career choice, funny bartender, and then, finally, New Yorker cartoonist And a sense of humor is why, having edited 400 books of my own cartoons, I was asked to pull together the collection you now hold in your hands. My assignment? Contact varied and interesting contributors living or working in this area we love, the Hudson Valley, then beg them to come up with funny material. The response was truly astounding, even to a jaded jaguar man like myself. The brilliant conductor/writer/college president Leon Botstein is here, along with the legendary singer/songwriter/rocker Graham Parker. Writer/poet/professor Robert Kelly shares a laugh, as does (out of slashes-must use alliteration) local literary luminary Mary Gaitskill, chiming in with a truly hilarious cartoon (who knew?). We have stars of stage and screen: Denny Dillon, Mary Louise Wilson, and Lou Trapani, to name a few. Rounding things out is a bevy of cartoonists and writers, artists, and poets, and whether you prefer a sly, knowing grin, a satisfied chuckle, or a full-out braying guffaw, all will make you laugh. So enjoy already. And don't forget to tip your bartender..

Epigraph (Lish, Gordon)
Who in real life is Lucilla? Or Louise? Did Gordon Lish do away with his wife Barbara in order that he might possess these women? Or did "Gordon Lish" do it? Who is Saint Firmus, then? Or Saint Eustatius? Or Mickey and Jack, or Wilhelm and Fred, or the Clerk of the Court, or the many Mercy Persons - from Bosoodi to Fez? Who wrote Epigraph, this epitaph for the deceased Barbara Lish? Was it "Gordon Lish" or Gordon Lish? Did this woman - in her paralysis and thereafter asphyxiation - suffer the extreme penalty of life because her husband, on his way to render her aid, preferred first to collect from the floor a "jibby-jibby", or was there never any lint at all?.

War & Again
War & Again is a mosaic of human lives assembled in a portrait by the forces of World War II. Not by their own choice, these people, as so many millions of others, were placed in the grueling portrait, by the choice of a few despotic, cruel, self-centered little people in command of large nations. The autobiography begins in 1939, near the start of World War II and continues to the final gasp in the breaking up of Soviet Russian Empire in 1992. Much as the mosaic, the vast influence and dominion of the Soviet Russia crumbled and broke into many tiny pieces. The account starts in the small, independent Baltic nation of Latvia. It continues for the next six decades while moving through Germany, United States, Korea, Australia, Russia, and back to Latvia. During these decades, two generations pass on, but the third generation insisted on retrieving the bulk of the family's substantial property. The little boy who witnessed the gruesome beginnings of World War II in Latvia and lived through the nights of murder in his country, moved on through the daily air raids and bombings in Germany, and later enjoyed the peaceful surroundings of Wisconsin and Illinois. However, the World was not yet at peace and the little boy, now a U.S. Marine, had to witness another war in Korea. These last few personal experiences with turmoil and human despair locked him in on the defined course of education. Starting during the most difficult of situations, while in Korea, he continued for more than fifteen years to get his degree in architecture and later added an MBA. In 1992, he returned to Latvia, while continuing to live and work in Philadelphia. When the new government offered the chance to retrieve pre-war personal properties, he wasted no time and claimed his grandfather's factories and other properties in Latvia. He organized corporations in Latvia and hired professionals in the paper industry, to assist through the scantily organized local government regulations. Major paper corporations from United States, several European countries, and even a delegation from China, visited the plants in Latvia. The conclusion of these expert visitors and the local economic conditions played a role in the final decisions by the Grandson..
