From the supplier: The progressive Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) led efforts to oppose the International Monetary Fund (IMF)-imposed restructuring program which include austerity measures and the allowing of firms to terminate employees at will. KCTU started an anti-IMF campaign and initiated a mass demonstration after the 8,000 lay-offs announced by Hyundai Motors Corp. Despite conflicting analysis on the implications of the agreement signed between the KCTU and the government, the contract illustrates the ability of the union to force the government and the IMF to back down.
