Windup in Control: Its Effects and Their Prevention (Advances in Industrial Control)
Actuator saturation is probably the most frequent nonlinearity encountered in control applications. Input saturation leads to controller windup, removable by structural modification during compensator realization and plant windup which calls for additional dynamics. Peter Hippe presents solutions to the windup prevention problem for stable and unstable single-input-single-output and multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems. The solutions use only standard tools for the investigation of linear systems – state equations, transfer functions, etc. The stability tests are based on well-known criteria for loops consisting of a linear part with isolated sector-type nonlinearity. Less rigorous "engineering solutions" which guarantee improved performance but without strict proof of stability are also demonstrated. MIMO systems in which the behaviour of controlled variables is decoupled require specific input vectors and so also suffer problems of directionality when their input signals saturate. This can have extremely deleterious consequences for closed-loop behaviour. Windup in Control offers an exact solution to this directionality problem for stable and unstable systems. The methods laid out in this survey also integrate solutions for applications with rate-constrained actuators and for bumpless transfer from manual to automatic during system start-up or in override control. Developments in control methods are always supplemented by easily repeated numerical examples. Academics doing control-related research in electronics, mechanics, or mechatronics and engineers working in the process industries will find this book an extremely useful overview of systematic windup prevention for all kinds of systems. It also has valuable insights to offer the graduate student of control. .

Constrained Clustering: Advances in Algorithms, Theory, and Applications (Chapman & Hall/Crc Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery Series)
Since the initial work on constrained clustering, there have been numerous advances in methods, applications, and our understanding of the theoretical properties of constraints and constrained clustering algorithms. Bringing these developments together, Constrained Clustering: Advances in Algorithms, Theory, and Applications presents an extensive collection of the latest innovations in clustering data analysis methods that use background knowledge encoded as constraints. Algorithms The first five chapters of this volume investigate advances in the use of instance-level, pairwise constraints for partitional and hierarchical clustering. The book then explores other types of constraints for clustering, including cluster size balancing, minimum cluster size, and cluster-level relational constraints. Theory It also describes variations of the traditional clustering under constraints problem as well as approximation algorithms with helpful performance guarantees. Applications The book ends by applying clustering with constraints to relational data, privacy-preserving data publishing, and video surveillance data. It discusses an interactive visual clustering approach, a distance metric learning approach, existential constraints, and automatically generated constraints. With contributions from industrial researchers and leading academic experts who pioneered the field, this volume delivers thorough coverage of the capabilities and limitations of constrained clustering methods as well as introduces new types of constraints and clustering algorithms..

Semirings for Soft Constraint Solving and Programming (Lecture Notes in Computer Science)
Constraint satisfaction and constraint programming have shown to be very simple but powerful ideas, with applications in various areas. Still, in the last ten years, the simple notion of constraints has shown some deficiencies concerning both theory and practice, typically in the way over-constrained problems and preferences are treated. For this reason, the notion of soft constraints has been introduced with semiring-based soft constraints and valued constraints being the two main general frameworks. This book includes formal definitions and properties of semiring-based soft constraints, as well as their use within constraint logic programming and concurrent constraint programming. Moreover, the author shows how to adapt existing notions and techniques such as abstraction and interchangeability to the soft constraint framework and it is demonstrated how soft constraints can be used in some application areas, such as security. Overall, this book is a great starting point for anyone interested in understanding the basics of semiring-based soft constraints. .

Practical Embedded Security: Building Secure Resource-Constrained Systems (Embedded Technology)
The great strides made over the last decade in the complexity and network functionality of embedded systems have significantly enhanced their attractiveness for use in critical applications such as medical devices and military communications. However, this expansion into critical areas has presented embedded engineers with a serious new problem: their designs are now being targeted by the same malicious attackers whose predations have plagued traditional systems for years. Rising concerns about data security in embedded devices are leading engineers to pay more attention to security assurance in their designs than ever before. This is particularly challenging due to embedded devices' inherent resource constraints such as limited power and memory. Therefore, traditional security solutions must be customized to fit their profile, and entirely new security concepts must be explored. However, there are few resources available to help engineers understand how to implement security measures within the unique embedded context. This new book from embedded security expert Timothy Stapko is the first to provide engineers with a comprehensive guide to this pivotal topic. From a brief review of basic security concepts, through clear explanations of complex issues such as choosing the best cryptographic algorithms for embedded utilization, the reader is provided with all the information needed to successfully produce safe, secure embedded devices. .The ONLY book dedicated to a comprehensive coverage of embedded security! .Covers both hardware and software-based embedded security solutions for preventing and dealing with attacks .Application case studies support practical explanations of all key topics, including network protocols, wireless and cellular communications, languages (Java and C/++), compilers, web-based interfaces, cryptography, and an entire section on SSL.

Nonlinear H2/H-Infinity Constrained Feedback Control: A Practical Design Approach Using Neural Networks (Advances in Industrial Control)
Modern aerospace, automotive, nautical, industrial, microsystem-assembly and robotic systems are becoming more and more complex High-performance vehicles no longer have built-in error safety margins, but are inherently unstable by design to allow for more flexible maneuvering options. With the push towards better performance in terms of greater accuracy and faster speed of response, control demands are increasing. The combination of highly nonlinear dynamics, relaxed static stability, and tight performance specifications places increasing demands on the design of feedback systems for control. Current control system design techniques have difficulty in meeting these demands. In this book the authors present algorithms for H2 and H-infinity design for nonlinear systems which, unlike earlier theories, provide solution techniques for the core Hamilton–Jacobi equations that yield control systems which can be implemented in real systems; neural networks are used to solve the nonlinear control design equations. Industrial and aerospace systems usually have constraints on the amplitudes of the control actuator inputs so techniques are set out for dealing with these. All results are proven mathematically to give confidence and performance guarantees and the design algorithms can be used to obtain practically useful controllers. Nearly optimal applications to constrained-state and mimimum-time problems are also discussed and since control systems are usually implemented using computer microprocessors, a chapter is devoted to discrete-time design to yield digital controllers. Nonlinear H2/H-infinity Constrained Feedback Control will be of major importance to control systems designers working in industrial, automotive, robotic, military and chemical process systems. Design and simulation case studies are given and the design of nonlinear control systems of the same caliber as those obtained in recent years using linear optimal and bounded-norm designs based on the Riccati equation is explained together with feedback control systems of guaranteed high performance that can be implemented directly as a nonlinear network structure. With its opening chapter introducing such necessary control system foundations as Lyapunov theory, passivity and game theory, the book will also be of great interest to academics and their graduate students in control systems as a complete foundation for H2 and H-infinity design. .

The Human Semantic Potential: Spatial Language and Constrained Connectionism
Drawing on ideas from cognitive linguistics, connectionism, and perception, The Human Semantic Potential describes a connectionist model that learns perceptually grounded semantics for natural language in spatial terms. Languages differ in the ways in which they structure space, and Regier's aim is to have the model perform its learning task for terms from any natural language. The system has so far succeeded in learning spatial terms from English, German, Russian, Japanese, and Mixtec. The model views simple movies of two-dimensional objects moving relative to one another and learns to classify them linguistically in accordance with the spatial system of some natural language. The overall goal is to determine which sorts of spatial configurations and events are learnable as the semantics for spatial terms and which are not. Ultimately, the model and its theoretical underpinnings are a step in the direction of articulating biologically based constraints on the nature of human semantic systems. Along the way Regier takes up such substantial issues as the attraction and the liabilities of PDP and structured connectionist modeling, the problem of learning without direct negative evidence, and the area of linguistic universals, which is addressed in the model itself. Trained on spatial terms from different languages, the model permits observations about the possible bases of linguistic universals and interlanguage variation.
