From the supplier: Conning and Co forecasts the number of independent insurance agencies which specialize in personal lines will drop by as much as 40% before 2006 while agencies which do 85% or more of their business in commercial lines will increase by 50%. This overall drop of 19% in the number of independent agencies is part of a trend, with reduction from about 53,500 in 1987 to 44,000 in 1996. Commercial lines companies tend to be larger and highly capitalized, and they will be able to offer value-adder service, focus on new sales, use new technologies and strategically adapt.
