Kara Walker: My Complement, My Enemy, My Oppressor, My Love
Kara Walker is among the most complex and prolific American artists of her generation Over the past decade, she has gained international recognition for her room-sized tableaux, which depict historical narratives haunted by sexuality, violence and subjugation and are made using the paradoxically genteel eighteenth-century art of cut-paper silhouettes. Set in the antebellum American South, Walker's compositions play off of stereotypes to portray, often grotesquely, life on the plantation, where masters, mistresses and slave men, women and children enact a subverted version of the past in an attempt to reconfigure their status and representation. Over the years, the artist has used drawing, painting, colored-light projections, writing, shadow puppetry, and, most recently, film animation to narrate her tales of romance, sadism, oppression and liberation. Her scenarios thwart conventional readings of a cohesive national history and expose the collective, and ongoing, psychological injury caused by the tragic legacy of slavery. Deploying an acidic sense of humor, Walker examines the dialectics of pleasure and danger, guilt and fulfillment, desire and fear, race and class. This landmark publication, which is sure to win international design awards, accompanies Walker's first major American museum survey. It features critical essays by Philippe Vergne, Sander L. Gilman, Thomas McEvilley, Robert Storr and Kevin Young, as well as an illustrated lexicon of recurring themes and motifs in the artist's most influential installations by Yasmil Raymond, more than 200 full-color images, an extensive exhibition history and bibliography, and a 36-page insert by the artist..

Divine Complement: The Spiritual Terrain of Soulmate Relationships
As most couples attest, when they met it was "love at first spark" as if something in their souls' memories was ignited But what is this mystery that brings soul mates together from as far away as opposite ends of the earth? Drawing from the legacy of Jesus and Mary Magdalene, mythology, soul mate dreams and depth psychology, and filled with the most fascinating stories of how soul mates met, Divine Complement examines the divine territory of a spirit-to-spirit connection that ultimately draws twin souls together. A surprising legacy emerges as we are given a more psychological look at the faces of Jesus and Mary Magdalene as twin souls and Sacred Bride and Bridegroom The book goes on to answer, for instance: Why is it that 88 % of singles believe there is one person in the world tailored for them; why opposites attract; how to recognize your authentic soul mate; and why is it that perfect matches often fail..

Current Topics in Complement II (Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology) (No. 2)
Aegean Conferences is an independent, nonprofit, educational organization directed and managed by the scientific community. The board is made up of nine researchers/scientists in various disciplines from Harvard, Brown, University of Pennsylvania, UCSD, Princeton, Biovista and the Foundation for Biomedical Research Academy of Athens. The board both invites and approves unsolicited proposals for Conferences in all fields of Science, Engineering, Arts, and Humanities. The purpose of the Conferences is to bring together individuals with common interests to examine the emerging and most advanced aspects of their particular field. Complement has long been regarded as a pivotal effector arm of the innate immune response, eliciting important immunoregulatory functions in the context of inflammation and also serving as a vital link between the innate and adaptive immune response. In the post-genomic era, our knowledge of the innate immune system is enriched by findings that point to novel functions that do not strictly correlate with immunological defense and surveillance, immune modulation or Inflammation. Several studies indicate that complement proteins exert functions that are either more complex than previously thought, or go well beyond the innate immune character of the system. The advent of high-throughput platforms for genome and proteome-wide profiling, together with the enormous amount of raw genetic information that has accumulated in the databases, have stirred new expectations in biomedical research. They have led complementologists to revisit established biological systems, such as the complement system, from a global and integrative perspective. Complement research is now faced with the challenge of trying to integrate isolated biochemical pathways into complex gene and protein regulatory circuits. In this respect, scientists from around the world will convene at the Fourth Aegean Conferences Workshop on Complement Associated Diseases, Animal Models, and Therapeutics (June 10-15, 2007), to discuss recent advances in this fast evolving field. This volume represents a collection of topics on the "novel" functions of complement, patho-physiology, protein structures, design of complement inhibitors, and complement assays discussed during the conference. .

The Complement System: Novel Roles in Health and Disease
The Complement System: Novel Roles in Health and Disease surveys the advances in basic and applied research on the complement system over the past few years. Complement is a major protein network in blood that has been traditionally conceived as part of the immune system, a proinflammatory cascade engaged in nonspecific antimicrobial defence. However, it became clear recently that this system also plays an essential role in specific, adaptive immune responses, as well as in many basic physiological processes including cardiovascular regulation, pregnancy and tissue regeneration, just to mention a few. Complement proteins are widely involved in the immune evasion tactics of infectious microbes and cancer cells, and derangement of complement function contributes to numerous autoimmune, allergic and acute catastrophic diseases. Because pharmacological manipulation of the complement system provides therapeutic benefit in many of these conditions, we may be very close to widespread clinical use of a new class of drugs influencing complement activation or action. In fact, complementology may be one of the most versatile and dynamic subdisciplines in medicine today. The 25 reviews of this volume, written by prominent experts, provide state-of-art insights into the various aspects of an amazing progress in this field..
