Designing Coherent Science Education: Implications for Curriculum, Instruction, and Policy (Technology, Education--Connections Series) (Technology, Education--Connections Series)
Too often in today's science classes, students learn isolated facts but are unprepared to apply scientific thinking outside of checking off answers on standardized tests. Designing Coherent Science Education demonstrates how effective instruction, supported by research-based curriculum materials and technologies, prepares learners to use scientific principles to make sense of the world around them. Arising from the National Science Foundation-funded Delineating and Evaluating Coherent Instructional Designs for Education (DECIDE) project, this volume brings together experts in curriculum development, technology-assisted learning, diversity, teacher education, and assessment to consider strategies that will help students achieve a more integrated understanding of science..

Oeuvres - Collected Papers: Volume 1: 1949 - 1959

From the reviews of Vols. I-III:

"Since their publication in 1986 J-P. Serre's Collected Papers have already become one of the classical references in mathematical research. This is on the one hand due to the completeness of the collection (132 items) and on the other, of course, due to the beautiful and clear expositions of Serre's papers and their influence on mathematics.

As listed in the preface, the three volumes cover almost all articles published in mathematical journals between 1949 and 1984, the summaries of the author's courses at the Collège de France since 1956, some of his Séminaire notes, and some items not previously published. [...]

The author's notes at the end of each volume giving corrections and important recent progress as well as improvements of the main results represent a highlight of this collection. The mathematical community definitely looks forward to further volume(s) of Serre's outstanding work."

Drugs and Justice: Seeking a Consistent, Coherent, Comprehensive Views
This compact and innovative book tackles one of the central issues in drug policy: the lack of a coherent conceptual structure for thinking about drugs. Drugs generally fall into one of seven categories: prescription, over the counter, alternative medicine, common-use drugs like alcohol, tobacco and caffeine; religious-use, sports enhancement; and of course illegal street drugs like cocaine and marijuana. Our thinking and policies varies wildly from one to the other, with inconsistencies that derive more from cultural and social values than from medical or scientific facts. Penalties exist for steroid use, while herbal remedies or cold medication are legal. Native Americans may legally use peyote, but others may not. Penalties may vary for using different forms of the same drug, such as crack vs. powder cocaine. Herbal remedies are unregulated by the FDA; but medical marijuana is illegal in most states. Battin and her contributors lay a foundation for a wiser drug policy by promoting consistency and coherency in the discussion of drug issues and by encouraging a unique dialogue across disciplines. The contributors are an interdisciplinary group of scholars mostly based at the University of Utah, and include a pharmacologist, a psychiatrist, a toxicologist, a trial court judge, a law professor, an attorney, a diatary specialist, a physician, a health expert on substance abuse, and Battin herself who is a philosopher. They consider questions like the historical development of current policy and the rationales for it; scientific views on how drugs actually cause harm; how to define the key notions of harm and addiction; and ways in which drug policy can be made more consistent. They conclude with an examination of the implications of a consistent policy for various disciplines and society generally. The book is written accessibly with little need for expert knowledge, and will appeal to a diverse audience of philosophers, bioethicists, clinicians, policy makers, law enforcement, legal scholars and practitioners, social workers, and general readers, as well as to students in areas like pharmacy, medicine, law, nursing, sociology, social work, psychology, and bioethics..

Fragmented Worlds, Coherent Lives: The Politics of Difference in Botswana
When the author first went to Botswana in the early 1980s to study the impact of a major land reform on rural life in this impoverished African country, social theory and ethnographic practice seemed solid and convincing A decade later, and again in 1999, Motzafi-Haller returned to Bostwana and to the Tswapong people whose lives she had shared. She not only encountered a rapidly shifting social reality, but also began asking questions that stemmed from--and were shaped by--theoretical frames quite different from those she had employed in her earlier work. At the center of study's central narrative is a critical reflexive discussion exploring the tension between data recorded at a particular historical moment and the interpretive frames offered to make sense of such data. Motzafi-Haller explores the meaning of writing in the "post" post-modernist moment, when master narratives have been questioned and the very act of representing "others" has been problematized. Key theoretical debates emerging in the aftermath of what came to be known as the postmodernist crisis are also discussed..

Turbulence And Coherent Structures in Fluids, Plasmas And Nonlinear Medium (World Scientific Lecture Notes in Complex Systems) (Lecture Notes in Complex Systems)
This book is based on the lectures delivered at the 19th Canberra International Physics Summer School held at the Australian National University in Canberra (Australia) in January 2006. The problem of turbulence and coherent structures is of key importance in many fields of science and engineering. It is an area which is vigorously researched across a diverse range of disciplines such as theoretical physics, oceanography, atmospheric science, magnetically confined plasma, nonlinear optics, etc. Modern studies in turbulence and coherent structures are based on a variety of theoretical concepts, numerical simulation techniques and experimental methods, which cannot be reviewed effectively by a single expert. The main goal of these lecture notes is to introduce state-of-the-art turbulence research in a variety of approaches (theoretical, numerical simulations and experiments) and applications (fluids, plasmas, geophysics, nonlinear optical media) by several experts. A smooth introduction is presented to readers who are not familiar with the field, while reviewing the most recent advances in the area. This collection of lectures will provide a useful review for both postgraduate students and researchers new to the advancements in this field, as well as specialists seeking to expand their knowledge across different areas of turbulence research..

SCI: Scalable Coherent Interface: Architecture and Software for High-Performance Compute Clusters (Lecture Notes in Computer Science)
Scalable Coherent Interface (SCI) is an innovative interconnect standard (ANSI/IEEE Std 1596-1992) addressing the high-performance computing and networking domain. This book describes in depth one specific application of SCI: its use as a high-speed interconnection network (often called a system area network, SAN) for compute clusters built from commodity workstation nodes. The editors and authors, coming from both academia and industry, have been instrumental in the SCI standardization process, the development and deployment of SCI adapter cards, switches, fully integrated clusters, and software systems, and are closely involved in various research projects on this important interconnect. This thoroughly cross-reviewed state-of-the-art survey covers the complete hardware/software spectrum of SCI clusters, from the major concepts of SCI, through SCI hardware, networking, and low-level software issues, various programming models and environments, up to tools and application experiences..
