A Choice of Hashmi's Verse
Wit, whimsy, and an exceptional lightness of touch characterize the work of Alamgir Hashmi, in certain respects the enfant terrible of Pakistani poetry in English. If the poems seem to conceive themselves with diverse cultural contexts, it is primarily to show the poet - sensualist no less than iconoclast - as equally at home (or displaced) everywhere. The tone may ring 'confessional' at times but it also rings true: the odyssean persona is entirely Hashmi's own. Alamgir Hashmi won the poetry prize in the All-Pakistan Creative Writing Contest in 1972 and the Patras Bokhari Award of the Pakistan Academy of Letters in 1985. He has published several collections of poetry, besides contributing to various prestigious journals both here and abroad. In 1978 he edited a special two-volume issue of the New Quarterly (New York) devoted to Pakistani literature in English. He has been Professor of English and Comparative Literature at several universities in Pakistan and abroad..
