Joe hurries to the assistance of an old friend who has been arrested for murder there. The only other witness, a blonde who was sharing the victim's box, has vanished. Joe receives assistance from an entirely unexpected quarter-Francine, a young usherette, clawing her way into the world of the Paris Music Hall. She becomes Joe's guide through this treacherous place, where Joe is sure the killer is lurking.

Barbara Cleverly was born in northern England, graduated from Durham University, and now lives in Cambridge. Her debut, The Last Kashmiri Rose, was a New York Times Notable Book of 2002.

Hester: the Remarkable Life of Dr. Johnson's 'Dear Mistress'
Hester Salusbury was a child prodigy Later, as Hester Thrale, her wit, learning and vivacity would attract the greats of the day, Joshua Reynolds, Fanny Burney, Boswell, David Garrick and Edmund Burke to the household at Streatham Park. She published to great popularity and acclaim on Johnson, irritating the hell out of Boswell, and remains one of our most perceptive sources. One of our first female historians, a feminist without knowing it, she also broke new ground in politics and business. When her husband died, rumours flew that she'd wed Johnson. Instead, she ran off with an Italian music teacher. The scandal consumed London society - and her relationship with her daughters. But Hester was passionately in love (it was a love that nearly killed her). This is a brightly lit portrait of an exceptional woman whose life, loves and letters make a vivid and important contribution to our understanding of Georgian England. Praise for Ian McIntyre's "Dirt and Deity: A Life of Robert Burns": 'If you read Burns, then buy this. If you don't read Burns, then start' - "Economist". 'A shrewd, clear, comprehensive and wonderfully readable portrait of Burns as fallible man and gifted poet' - A.C. Grayling, "Financial Times". For "Joshua Reynolds": 'Stunning and richly entertaining...superlative' - Philip Hensher, "The Times"..

Romance on a Global Stage: Pen Pals, Virtual Ethnography, and "Mail Order" Marriages
By the year 2000 more than 350 Internet agencies were plying the email-order marriage trade, and the business of matching up mostly Western men with women from Asia, Eastern Europe, and Latin America had become an example of globalization writ large. This provocative work opens a window onto the complex motivations and experiences of the people behind the stereotypes and misconceptions that have exploded along with the practice of transnational courtship and marriage. Combining extensive Internet ethnography and face-to-face fieldwork, Romance on a Global Stage looks at the intimate realities of Filipinas, Chinese women, and U.S. men corresponding in hopes of finding a suitable marriage partner.

Through the experiences of those engaged in pen pal relationships--their stories of love, romance, migration, and long-distance dating--this book conveys the richness and dignity of women's and men's choices without reducing these correspondents to calculating opportunists or naive romantics. Attentive to the structural, cultural, and personal factors that prompt women and men to seek marriage partners abroad, Romance on a Global Stage questions the dichotomies so frequently drawn between structure and agency, and between global and local levels of analysis..

Losing Ground (Detective Chief Inspector C.D. Sloan)

"Fans have waited two years for another of Aird's Calleshire County police procedurals, and if you like golf, this well-crafted whodunit was especially worth the wait….Full of poetical, biblical and Shakespearian references, this fun read delivers a denouement that finishes the game well under par. Nicely played."
Publishers Weekly on Hole in One

"Trust mystery writer Catherine Aird to add her own special twists and lots of biting wit to murder…the settings are classic, the characters delightfully quirky, and the words of wisdom many." –Boston Herald on Amendment of Life

The dramatic theft of an 18th Century painting is discovered just moments before the old manor house from which it was stolen – and is uniquely depicted in the background of the portrait -- is set on fire. Making matters more grisly even is the pile of bones that is sighted in the blazing inferno moments before the roof collapses. What started as simple, if surprising, theft has quickly escalated to arson and, possibly murder, and now Detective Inspector Sloan and Detective Constable Crosby have to piece together, a puzzle which has its roots deep in Berebury’s history. Although Tolmie Park, the property on which the manor house sits, has had a somewhat checkered and mysterious past there are those in the community who would fight to preserve it. There are also a number of factions within the area who have differing plans to develop the property, shrouding the fire in further suspicion. It is up D.C.I. C.D. Sloan to sift through this assortment of characters and, finally, illuminate the truth.
