Snowflake Bentley (Caldecott Medal Book)
From the time he was a small boy, Wilson Bentley saw snowflakes as small miracles And he determined that one day his camera would capture for others the wonder of the tiny crystal Bentley's enthusiasm for photographing snowflakes was often misunderstood in his time, but his patience and determination revealed two important truths: no two snowflakes are alike; and each one is startlingly beautiful. His story is gracefully told and brought to life in lovely woodcuts, giving children insight into a soul who had not only a scientist's vision and perseverance but a clear passion for the wonders of nature. "Of all the forms of water the tiny six-pointed crystals of ice called snow are incomparably the most beautiful and varied." -- Wilson Bentley. SNOWFLAKE BENTLEY won the 1999 Caldecott Medal..

Programming Pearls (2nd Edition) (ACM Press)
"The first edition of Programming Pearls was one of the most influential books I read early in my career, and many of the insights I first encountered in that book stayed with me long after I read it. Jon has done a wonderful job of updating the material. I am very impressed at how fresh the new examples seem." --Steve McConnell When programmers list their favorite books, Jon Bentley's collection of programming pearls is commonly included among the classics. Just as natural pearls grow from grains of sand that irritate oysters, programming pearls have grown from real problems that have irritated real programmers. With origins beyond solid engineering, in the realm of insight and creativity, Bentley's pearls offer unique and clever solutions to those nagging problems. Illustrated by programs designed as much for fun as for instruction, the book is filled with lucid and witty descriptions of practical programming techniques and fundamental design principles. It is not at all surprising that Programming Pearls has been so highly valued by programmers at every level of experience. In this revision, the first in 14 years, Bentley has substantially updated his essays to reflect current programming methods and environments. In addition, there are three new essays on / testing, debugging, and timing / set representations / string problems All the original programs have been rewritten, and an equal amount of new code has been generated. Implementations of all the programs, in C or C++, are now available on the Web. What remains the same in this new edition is Bentley's focus on the hard core of programming problems and his delivery of workable solutions to those problems. Whether you are new to Bentley's classic or are revisiting his work for some fresh insight, the book is sure to make your own list of favorites. 0201657880B04062001.

Traveling On A High Frequency: Photographs 1978-2008, Jay Blakesberg
Traveling On a High Frequency is 304 pages of pure rock and roll intensity created where light and motion, energy and magic all collide together and crystallize on a piece of film. This photographic journey includes images Jay Blakesberg made as a suburban NJ teenager in the late 1970’s of such diverse artists as Muddy Waters, Crosby Stills & Nash, Roger McGuinn of the Byrds, The Grateful Dead, Eric Clapton, and Bob Dylan. After his arrival in San Francisco in the mid 1980’s, this serious hobby transformed in to a career with assignments from leading music magazines documenting the newly exploding birth of alternative rock. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Jane’s Addiction were all playing small clubs and starting their ascension to the top while Blakesberg was there to capture it on film. A 1987 assignment for Rolling Stone Magazine photographing a free U2 concert in downtown San Francisco was the beginning of a string of over 250 assignments for the venerable rock magazine. With higher profile assignments came opportunities to work with artists such as Carlos Santana, Tom Waits, John Lee Hooker, Radiohead, Neil Young, Sammy Hagar, BB king, Tracy Chapman and many others. Onstage, in the photo pit, backstage, on location, and in the photo studio is where Blakesberg spent a solid 22 years documenting the true zeitgeist of the pop culture experience known as ROCK and ROLL. Capturing that “Magical Musical Moment” for magazines, record companies, and the artists themselves required a combination of creativity, technical knowledge, and a passion for the music that was unfolding in front of his lens. The photographs in this book will take you on an exciting journey thru 3 decades of rock and roll seen thru the eye's of Jay Blakesberg..
